Why Do I Need To Prune My Florida Palm Trees?

Wendy Walker • August 17, 2021

If you live in Florida, more than likely your yard is adorned with palm trees.  Palm trees complement your yard, making it lush and tropical.  Florida palm trees need pruning to keep them beautiful, healthy, and safe.

Falling fronds (leaves), petioles (the stem of the palm frond), and seed pods from tall palm trees can cause damage to pedestrians and property.

Palm trees need to be pruned when fronds are dying (turning yellow or brown) or when it bears fruit/flowers.  Dying fronds take away nutrients from the palm tree that is needed to stay healthy.  New sprouts at the base also need to be removed.  They take nutrients away from the main trunk.

We recommend a 3/9 cut (like the hands on a clock) when pruning a palm tree.  A 3/9 cut promotes growth, defends against pests, and protects the central bud from wind damage.  The proper amount of fronds produce carbohydrates for strong growth which in turn produces a strong trunk.

Refrain from giving your palm tree a hurricane cut (when you only have 2-3 fronds left standing straight up from the bud).  A hurricane cut starves your palm tree of nutrients which keeps your palm tree green and healthy.  A hurricane cut actually leaves your palm tree vulnerable during a storm.  Your city may even impose fines for this type of cut.
