How To Prune Florida Palm Trees
Are your Florida palm trees looking overgrown? Are there brown fronds (leaves) drooping from the bud of the palm tree? Are seeds dropping all over your yard?
If your Florida palm trees are looking more sad than beautiful, follow these simple steps.
- Assemble proper pruning equipment
A. Pruning Shears for small fronds
A hand saw for medium fronds
A chain saw for large fronds
B. Simple cleaner to disinfect your tools (Lysol, alcohol, or bleach)
C. Safety gear (safety glasses, gloves, hard hat, long sleeve shirt, and pants)
D. Ladder (if needed)
2. Cut any dying fronds (yellow or brown) about 2 inches away from the petiole (stem) base. Be careful not to damage the trunk. We recommend the 9 by 3 cut as illustrated by the hands on a clock. This type of cut promotes growth.
3. Remove all seed pods, fruit, and flowers.
4. Remove any sprouts to maintain the health of the main trunk.
Properly pruning your Florida palm tree promotes growth, keeping them beautiful and safe.
Always use caution when pruning your palm trees. Palm fronds have sharp edges, spikes, and thorns. If you are pricked by a thorn, it may cause pain, swelling, and stiffness. Pest debris can build up and fall during pruning. Ladders can be unstable depending on the location or size of the palm tree.
